As a professional, you know that feeling well: you've invested in the best lift kit on the market, followed the protocols to the letter, and yet, when you remove the shield, the result isn't what you expected. Lashes that haven't lifted, frizzy tips, or an uneven curl that does justice to neither your talent nor the quality of your salon.

But the reality is that in the treatment room, the process is usually far more complex than simply applying the products according to the manufacturer's protocol — something we tell you often when we get questions like this. The same product can leave a flawless result on one client and, on another, cause an irregular curl, an overly pronounced lash, crossed tips or a lack of lift.

And that's exactly where the key lies: an eyelash lift doesn't depend solely on product quality. The success of a professional eyelash lift depends on managing physical, anatomical and chemical variables that the manufacturer can't control for you.

If you want to stop crossing your fingers every time you remove the product and start guaranteeing flawless results, you need to understand what's really happening in those 45 minutes of treatment. These are the critical mistakes that are ruining your results.

1. Choosing the wrong shield for the lash's actual structure.

One of the most common mistakes is thinking that the shield size only depends on the length of the natural lash. Many professionals choose a small shield with the idea of "making the lift more noticeable," but when the lash is forced onto a curve that's too tight for its length or natural elasticity, the fiber doesn't work evenly during the exposure time.

It's key to understand that choosing the shield is, in reality, an exercise in eye architecture that must take into account the natural direction of the hair, the curve of the eyelid, where the lash is implanted, and even the rigidity of the fiber. It sounds complex, but we'll break it down clearly below.

These are the three technical factors you need to master when choosing a shield:

  • The inflection point and projection

The shield doesn't just curl the lash — it determines where the gaze "looks." If you choose a diameter that's too small for a long lash, the hair will form such a tight curve that it will end up hitting the mobile eyelid. This isn't just aesthetically wrong, it also creates real discomfort for the client when blinking or applying makeup. The key isn't how long the lash is, but how much distance there is between the root and the orbital bone.

What should we do in this situation?

To prevent the lash from hitting the eyelid, the correct technique is to carry out a projection measurement. Before applying any product, place the shield on the eyelid and lift the dry hair as shown in the image: if, when you stretch the lash, the tip goes past the highest point of the shield's curve and points directly at the eyelid skin, that shield is too small or too curved for that eye.

In this scenario, the technical solution is to go up a shield size or switch to a hybrid profile. The goal is for the tip of the hair to always rest on the upper third of the shield, staying parallel to the eyelid but never pointing toward it.

Remember 👉🏻 the more prominent the eyelid or orbital bone, the more open a curve (flatter shield) we need to gain visual length without compromising the client's comfort.

  • Diagnosing the exit angle

Another invisible mistake that ruins a lift is not evaluating the direction the hair grows from the follicle. The exit angle is the natural tilt of the lash relative to the eyelid, and not every client starts from the same baseline.

Case 1 - If you're working with a client with downward growth, meaning lashes that grow downward (very common in hooded eyes or clients of Asian descent), and you use a traditional round rod, the hair will have to make an excessive mechanical effort to curl. The result? The lift will be poor, the lash will look "heavy," and the effect will barely last a few days, since the hair will try to return to its natural direction.

In these cases, the goal isn't to achieve a curl, but to correct the exit angle.

    • Change of tool. Use a flat-base shield (the shield used in the Korean technique). These shields let you project the hair vertically upward immediately from the root before starting any type of curve.
    • Saturation point. When applying Step 1, make sure to get as close to the base as possible (always respecting the 1-2 mm safety margin) so the product's chemistry softens the structure right where the problem originates.
    • Result. By correcting the growth angle with a flat shield, we manage to "open up" the gaze and keep the lash lifted for much longer, even as the hair starts to grow out.

Case 2 - Clients with disorderly growth lashes, meaning they don't have a uniform growth pattern — their lashes grow at different heights along the waterline or cross naturally from the root.

In this case, if you try to force all these lashes onto a shield with a lot of curve, the roots that sit higher on the eyelid will end up over-curled, while the lower ones will barely lift. The result is a lift that looks "messy" and disorganized.

Here the diagnosis forces us to work by bonding zones. You should use a slow-drying adhesive that lets you manipulate the hair and, above all, a shield with a wide contact surface. The key is to align the roots before the tips. If you manage to get the base of all the lashes onto the same line of the shield, you'll have corrected the eye's visual structure.

Case 3 - Clients with horizontal growth and stiff hair, known as glassy hair. These are lashes that don't point downward, but are so straight and strong that they look rigid, impossible to tame.

This type of lash has a very closed cuticle and a lot of elastic memory. If you use a very small shield hoping they'll curl, the hair will most likely "win" over the product and the lift will drop within three days, or worse, the tips will end up shooting forward in an unnatural way.

The solution is over-extension on the shield. You need a very flexible silicone shield that lets you stretch the hair to its maximum capacity. In this case, Step 1 requires an extra minute of exposure (or the use of controlled heat if the protocol allows it) to break down that glassy resistance. The goal isn't for the lash to look curved, but to look launched, achieving that open "fan" effect.

  • Anchor symmetry and the "step" effect

Often, a lift turns out badly not because of the shield chosen, but because of how it was bonded to the eyelid. There's a critical precision mistake known as the "step" effect.

If, when bonding the silicone shield, you leave even a millimeter of gap from the waterline (the root of the lashes), the chemical product will act by creating a curve that starts too late. This creates a broken angle or a visible step. The lash doesn't grow lifted — it comes out straight and suddenly breaks upward.

To fix this problem, follow these steps:

  • Eyelid tensioning: To ensure a perfect anchor, you should gently tension the eyelid upward before placing the shield. This lets you see exactly where the lashes grow from.
  • Contact point: The shield should rest right on top of the roots, without pressing on them but without leaving any gap either.
  • Bilateral symmetry: Make sure the placement is identical on both eyes. A shield that's one millimeter higher than the other will result in an asymmetrical look that the product won't be able to correct.

If you're struggling to keep the shield attached to the skin at the corners (tear duct and outer corner), use a strong-hold adhesive specific to shields. A professional tip is to press the shield down for 10 seconds before starting to lift the lashes. The heat from your finger will help the silicone adapt to the skin's temperature and achieve a full seal, eliminating any risk of the step effect.

2. Ignoring the natural direction and alignment of the hair

Placing the lash direction incorrectly on the shield is probably the technical mistake we see most often in clients who consult with our technical team.

It's common to attach the hair to the shield quickly and purely vertically, forgetting that a lift is a design for the gaze, and needs to look good both on the day of the service and three weeks later.

When direction isn't handled with precision, these two critical problems can arise:

  • Crossed lashes, also known as the "knot effect"

The secret to an eyelash lift is parallelism. If the lashes are bonded to the shield crossing over one another, even minimally, Step 1 will permanently fix that new internal structure. The problem shows up once the natural lash grows out, since those small crossings turn into tangles that are impossible for the client to comb through, giving an appearance of carelessness and poor technique that she'll wrongly attribute to poor product quality or to us having "burned" her lashes — sounds familiar, right?

To avoid this, you shouldn't lift the lashes all at once, but by section:

  • Tear duct area: A slight direction toward the bridge of the nose to visually open the inner corner.
  • Central area: Absolute verticality (90° relative to the waterline).
  • Outer corner: Direction toward the temple (outward) to elongate the eye and create the cat-eye effect.
  • Uneven tension

Another placement mistake is not applying uniform mechanical tension. If one lash has more tension than the one next to it, the curve will come out different, so you need to stretch every hair the same amount, with no "slack" at the root. Using a fine-tooth separating tool like the Y Brush (available in our store) is essential to make sure each hair is worked individually and holds the same tension.

👉🏻 An expert tip we recommend is to always do an alignment check before applying the chemical product. Once the lashes are bonded, look at them from the client's angle (face-on). If you spot even a single crossed hair or a loose root, fix it with a tiny drop of adhesive. Remember: once Step 1 acts on the disulfide bonds, the direction becomes fixed for good.

3. The adhesion deficit

Another common mistake is underestimating how important it is to keep every lash perfectly bonded to the shield for the entire exposure time.

It's very common that, after applying and removing Step 1, some lashes come loose from the shield because the chemical product has softened the hair's structure and it has lost its initial tension. Those lashes end up "floating" or detached from the silicone, so the curve won't set correctly. The result will be an uneven design, with some lashes lifted and others keeping their natural shape, giving the final work a careless, unprofessional look.

For this reason, we recommend constant monitoring during the service, especially when removing Step 1. Check both eyes carefully, and if you notice any lash has come away from the shield, apply a small amount of adhesive and, using a specific lift tool like the Y Brush, reattach it to the shield, making sure it regains its original tension and direction. Only once every lash is perfectly parallel and bonded again should you move on to the sealing step.

Don't be afraid to apply extra adhesive if you see a lash resisting. Since professional adhesives are non-occlusive, they allow Step 2 to penetrate and fix the new shape even if you've had to re-bond a section. The priority here is the architecture of the design: if the lash isn't touching the shield, the curve doesn't exist.

4. Using a Step 1 without assessing hair porosity

Step 1 (or the perm gel) is a reducing agent with one mission: to break the disulfide bonds so the hair becomes moldable. However, applying the same exposure time to every client is the fastest route to a failed lift or damaged lashes.

The mistake we make is ignoring cuticle permeability. Working on a virgin lash isn't the same as working on a lash that's already been through tints or previous lifts and is already affected by those treatments.

  • Porous hair: Has an open cuticle. It absorbs the product at lightning speed. If you go over by even one minute, the hair over-processes and the dreaded frizz appears.
  • Low-porosity hair: This is a shiny, thick, very closed lash. The product slides off and struggles to penetrate. Here, the standard time falls short and the lift simply "doesn't take."

The technical solution is to do a porosity test and apply the product by zone:

  • Before starting, examine the client's lash hair closely. If it's dull and fine, it's porous (less time). If it's very dark, shiny and rigid, it's glassy (more time).
  • Never apply the product from root to tip. The tip is the oldest, most porous part — if you saturate it the same as the root, you'll burn it. The product should be concentrated on the lower and middle third of the lash, leaving the tips free or protected with a nourishing balm.
  • Chemistry is thermodynamic. If your treatment room is especially cold, the reaction will be slower. If it's warm, Step 1 will act much faster. You also need to adjust your timing based on your room's temperature.

Nowadays, the industry has evolved so we no longer have to rely on a single standard formula. Leading brands like Maxymova, benchmarks in Korean lifting, already offer specific options so you can choose based on the lash's condition or type:

  • Cysteamine-based formulas: Ideal for fine or damaged lashes. Since it's a molecule similar to natural keratin, it works gently, minimizing the risk of frizz.
  • Combined formulas (Cysteamine HCl + Thioglycolic Acid): For thick or unruly hair that needs a more powerful cuticle opening.

Finally, it's worth mentioning that we also run the risk of overexposure. When the product breaks too many disulfide bonds without control, the hair's internal structure collapses. The result is a lash that loses its elasticity and looks curled in a zig-zag.

That's why, as professionals, we recommend not relying only on the timer. Do a flexibility check halfway through the exposure time. With a professional tweezer, pick up a lash and lift it off the shield: if you see the hair has already lost its natural rigidity and adapts without resistance to the shape of the silicone, it's time to remove the product, even if the manufacturer says there are two minutes left.

5. Failure in hair neutralization

Many professionals see Step 2 (the fixing step) as a simple formality, when in reality it's the step that builds the new internal structure. If this step fails, the lift falls apart the moment the client washes her face for the first time.

Step 2 has a critical chemical mission: to close the disulfide bonds that Step 1 left open. So if you remove the product too soon or don't apply enough of it, the lash is left in an unstable state. It looks perfect visually when you finish, but since the keratin hasn't sealed properly, the hair regains its weight and natural shape in less than 48 hours. It's the classic case of: "Yesterday they looked amazing, and today they've already dropped."

To ensure the design holds for the 6-8 weeks of the lash's life cycle, we need to follow this protocol:

  • As a general rule, Step 2 should be left on for the same amount of time as Step 1. If the lash needed 12 minutes to soften, it will need at least 12 minutes to fix safely. Cutting this time short puts the service's retention at risk.
  • Absolute cleanliness between steps. If any residue of Step 1 remains on the shield, it will neutralize part of Step 2, weakening its fixing power. You must remove the first product thoroughly with a dry cotton swab before applying the second.
  • Unlike the adhesive (where less is more), with Step 2 we need the hair to be well soaked in the product to make sure it penetrates all the way to the cortex of every lash, especially the thicker ones.

If, when removing the shield, you notice the lash has no elasticity, neutralization was probably poor. A properly fixed lash should feel firm in its new position.

6. Working on a dehydrated base and skipping the nourishing seal

We often forget that the lash is, essentially, hair. If its structure is dehydrated, porous or lacking in lipids, it won't respond correctly to any chemical process. A lift on an unhealthy lash is the perfect recipe for frizz.

A dry lash behaves like a sponge, absorbing Step 1 in an uncontrolled way, but since it lacks internal elasticity, it breaks. The result isn't a nice curve — it's bent tips or frizz that appears 24 hours after the treatment.

As an expert, you should know that a lift doesn't end with Step 2. For a truly authoritative result, the protocol must include mandatory nourishment.

Today there's a wide range of hydrating products specific to this treatment. For example, Lash Botox or Pure Keratin aren't optional extras, they're reconstruction steps. Once neutralization is finished, the hair's cuticle is receptive. This is the moment to introduce low molecular weight molecules (such as collagen, keratin or hyaluronic acid) that fill the cortex and seal the cuticle.
