They walk in with an Instagram photo or a TikTok video of a glossy, almond-shaped eye with a perfect vertical lift and tell you: "I want the Korean effect".

The Korean Lash Lift has jumped off the screen and stopped being a social media micro-trend to become the new quality standard in beauty salons. But what is Korean lash lift, really? Is it simply a way of doing the lift with a flat shield, or are there real changes in the product formulas?

To understand Korean lash lift, we first need to forget what we knew about the traditional perm.

The traditional lift (heir to the old-fashioned perm) had a mechanical goal: to curl the lash. To achieve this, highly alkaline pH formulas (9.0–9.5) based on aggressive thioglycolates were used, forcing the cuticle open to penetrate quickly into the hair cortex.

The result was usually a pronounced curl, yes, but often came with dehydration, porosity and a fibre that was visibly more damaged over time. Fortunately, traditional formulas have been perfected over the years, incorporating pH regulators that safeguard the health of the lash.

Nowadays, a good lift (with a guaranteed original formula) is completely safe and remains the best option when a very pronounced curl is the goal. The difference with the Korean trend is not safety, since both are safe today, but rather the type of design (curl vs. lift) and the extra level of nourishment during the process.

Korean lash lift is born from a different premise: the Asian obsession with caring for hair structure. It does not just aim to change the shape; it aims to improve the quality of the lash during the process, treating it while it is being lifted.

Its formulas are designed to respect the internal structure of the fibre, control processing times more precisely, and support the process with protective, nourishing ingredients such as keratin, collagen, biotin or vitamin complexes.

2. Flat Shields

This is where 50% of the visual success of this technique lies. It doesn't matter which product you use if you don't use the correct shield.

Traditional (doll effect): A very round curl (C or U type) was the goal. The problem with this curvature is that, on short or medium lashes, the lash curls back so much that, seen from the front, it looks shorter than it really is.

Korean (eyeliner effect): Priority is given to flat shields (L or M shapes). The design is focused on lifting the lash rather than curling it. It aims to lift the root upwards with extreme verticality. This visually stretches the lash to the maximum, creating that "wide open eye" or elongated eyeliner look that new generations are after.

3. The Adhesive Myth: Glue or Glue Balm?

There is a common misconception that if you don't use a balm, it isn't a Korean lash lift. Let's clarify this technical point from real salon experience.

• Traditional: Uses classic liquid glue to fix the lash to the shield. It is effective, dries quickly and holds firmly.

• The Korean trend (balms): The use of fixing balms (Glue Balms) has become popular because their creamy, oil-rich texture makes combing easier and lets you separate the lashes without them stiffening up as quickly. Removal is also simple, as water is usually enough.

Is it mandatory? No. Korean lash lift does NOT exclusively use balm. And using balm does NOT automatically turn a traditional lift into a "Korean" one.

👉🏻 Seena Owell note: Balm is a personal choice for comfort. It is used in many Korean lifts because it allows the lash to be worked with flexibility, but we don't recommend it in every case. On very thick, long or "stubborn" lashes (with strong root resistance), balm may not offer enough grip and you will need a classic glue. What matters is the treatment as a whole, not the glue.

4. Grow-out: The End of the Frizzy Effect

This is the advantage that builds client loyalty and can justify a higher price for the service.

• Traditional: If exposure time was excessive or the formula was aggressive, as the natural lash grew out, the treated section could look stiff, frizzy or with "burnt" tips.

• Korean: By working with gentler formulas and always adding a powerful final nourishing step, the lift effect fades away gradually and cleanly. The lash slowly returns to its natural state, with no abrupt breaks or damaged tips.
