And it's no coincidence. This format has revolutionised the way the natural nail is prepared, offering faster, longer-lasting and more versatile results.
What's clear to us is that rubber bases are not a passing trend. They're here to stay because they solve several common problems in the semi-permanent manicure process: they level, strengthen and extend the wear time without complicating the technical work, and for professionals, that's wonderful.

What is a rubber base?
Let's start by explaining exactly what it is: a rubber base, also called a "rubber base coat" or "levelling base", is a thick, flexible base specially formulated to improve the adhesion of semi-permanent polish and strengthen the natural nail. Its texture makes it possible to fill in irregularities, smooth the surface of the nail and create a natural curvature. It's also ideal for levelling or small extensions, without needing more complex products such as gels or acrylics.
Thanks to its special formulation, rubber base acts as an intermediate layer between the natural nail and the polish, noticeably improving the durability of the semi-permanent manicure. It's especially useful on thin, brittle nails or those with irregularities, since it provides structural reinforcement without stiffness. Its elasticity also helps prevent breakage and lifting, even under demanding daily use. This combination of strength and flexibility is the key to its success, as it optimises results without complicating the process for professionals.

How to use Rubber Base?
The key to making the most of a rubber base lies in applying it correctly. Since the uses you can give this base vary, below we share the step-by-step process for correctly applying a rubber base in each case. Whether you're just starting to work with this product or already use it in your salon, this refresher will help you perfect the technique and ensure professional results in every service.
Keep in mind that in all of them, you always have to start by preparing the nail: pushing back cuticles, removing any remaining skin, cleaning and dehydrating the natural nail with a primer.

As a conventional base
You can use rubber base as a conventional base to add flexibility to the nail. To do this, apply a thin layer of gel to the nail and cure under the lamp. You can then move on to polishing.

As a thickening base
In this case we'll use rubber base to thicken the nail and give it more hardness. We start by applying a thin layer, which we cure under the lamp for 30 seconds. The next step is to do what's called a "building layer". To do this, we apply a thicker layer, depositing it on the nail with circular movements from the base to the tip. Then we finish off with a fine detailing brush, especially on the sides and tip.
For a perfect levelling, we need to leave a small curve in the centre of the nail; this step is essential to reinforce the stress zone. You can also carry out self-levelling of the base: to do this, turn the client's hand for a few seconds so that the product concentrates in the centre and improves the finish.
To finish, we cure under the lamp for 60 seconds and can then move on to polishing or whatever decoration the client wants.

To extend the nail with Gel Tips
The first thing we'd do is choose the right shape and size of Gel Tip. The next step is to apply a thin layer of clear rubber base to the natural nail (uncured) and also a small amount inside the tip, in the bonding area, which is usually matte. It's important to choose a clear rubber base for this use so that it cures and bonds correctly.
Next, we press the tip onto the nail, starting from the cuticle area and moving towards the free edge to avoid bubbles. It's important to leave a gap of around 4-5 mm from the tip to the cuticle. Once placed, we cure it under an LED lamp while still pressing the tip so that no air bubbles form. After curing, use a file or e-file to smooth down the step left between the tip and the nail at the base area.
If you want greater strength or a smoother surface, you can apply an additional layer of rubber base over the tip and level it before curing under the lamp again, polishing or applying the top coat.
This technique greatly simplifies extension services and lets you offer your clients a long-lasting, comfortable result with an impeccable finish.

To extend the natural nail with a shield
In this case we start by placing the shield on the nail and applying a small amount of rubber base to the tip area of the nail and the part of the shield we want to extend; a detailing brush can help spread the product along the sides. Here it's important to keep in mind that the extension you can achieve with rubber base is moderate.
We cure this first application under the lamp for 30 seconds and move on to the second, in which we complete the rest of the nail with the base and level it against the first layer. We can ask the client to turn her hand over to do the self-levelling mentioned earlier.
We cure under the lamp for 60 seconds and can then move on to filing to shape the nail, polishing, decoration, etc.
