UV/LED adhesives: the trend that is changing how eyelash extensions are bonded

1. UV/LED adhesives: the trend that is changing how eyelash extensions are bonded

UV/LED adhesives are gaining ground in the eyelash extension sector. More and more professional brands are adding light-curing formulas, since being able to decide when to bond the extension to the lash is something that is drawing interest from lash artists and specialist salons.

At Seena Owell we follow this development from the angle that matters most in the treatment room: how the product behaves, how much control it gives you during application and what you need to know before adding it to your service.

What this technology offers is the ability to place the extension, adjust its position and only then activate the cure. To understand what it brings, it makes sense to start with the formulation and how it differs from conventional adhesive.

2. Conventional vs UV/LED adhesive: the difference lies in the curing mechanism

Many conventional extension adhesives have ethyl cyanoacrylate as their main component, together with other ingredients that adjust properties such as viscosity, stability or colour. These may include polymers and, in black formulas, pigments.

Cyanoacrylate is a monomer: during polymerisation its molecules link up into chains and the adhesive turns from liquid to solid. In conventional formulas, moisture triggers this reaction. That is why bonding starts to progress without the professional having to activate any device.

What light-curing adhesives add

In this category we find formulas that keep a cyanoacrylate base and add photoinitiators, components that respond to a specific light radiation and start the curing process.

The exact formulation varies between manufacturers. Not all adhesives use the same photoinitiators, nor do they respond to identical exposure parameters.

The professional difference is that LED light curing lets you control bonding after the extension has been placed. This should not be confused with having unlimited time under any lighting: ambient exposure and storage conditions still need attention.

3. Why this trend matters to professionals

What is new is the change in the relationship between placement and bonding.

With a conventional adhesive, your movement has to be completed within its working time. With a light-curing one, you can position the extension and activate the cure once you have achieved the contact and direction you want.

This approach is already part of the offering of specialist international brands. Its professional appeal comes down to two things: greater control during placement and less reliance on how conventional drying reacts to the environment.

For a lash artist, this means being able to check the position before bonding it and organising the application around a deliberate activation of the lamp. Technical precision is still essential, but the margin you work with changes.

4. In high-humidity areas, controlling the cure is especially valuable

Professionals working in coastal or high-humidity areas know this problem well: an adhesive that is manageable in some conditions can set too quickly in others.

The problem arises when the curing speed outpaces the actual placement speed. The adhesive can start to polymerise before the base of the extension has made proper contact with the natural lash.

At that point the extension may look attached, but the bond may not have formed correctly. The result can be premature shedding of the extension, even if the finish looked right at the end of the appointment.

This is where light curing offers an interesting alternative: it reduces reliance on that ambient reaction and lets you activate bonding after positioning the extension.

As we explained in the article how to choose the best eyelash extension adhesive, humidity and temperature should be assessed according to the formula used. This time, the change is adding another way to control when curing happens.

5. What it can bring to application and retention

More margin to achieve proper contact

The base of the extension needs to sit properly on the natural lash. If the adhesive sets before that contact is complete, the initial appearance does not guarantee a good bond.

Having time to check the placement before curing lets you work on that critical point: direction, alignment and contact.

Bonding that depends less on conventional drying

Light-activated curing reduces reliance on the drying time typical of conventional adhesive. This can be useful when ambient conditions make it hard to keep the product's behaviour consistent.

More control over one variable of the service

Retention depends on several factors: lash preparation, adhesive condition, amount applied, contact, technique and aftercare. UV/LED curing lets you control part of that process, but of course it does not replace the rest.

Longer wear cannot be taken for granted simply because you use a light-curing adhesive. What it brings is control over bonding and how that control fits into a correct application. Manufacturers themselves identify many causes of poor retention beyond the environment.

6. Luna UV/LED by Maxymova: this technology in your salon

Luna UV/LED by Maxymova is a professional eyelash extension adhesive that lets you control bonding with a compatible UV/LED lamp.

The extension can be placed and adjusted before curing. Once the desired position is achieved, the light is activated following the device's instructions.

As mentioned, this way of working makes for a precise, controlled application while reducing reliance on conventional drying and the influence of changing ambient conditions.

Luna comes in black, in a 5 g bottle, is made in Korea and is for professional use only.

The pack includes the adhesive, a protective pouch, a silica gel sachet and a spare nozzle. These accessories help with storage and upkeep between services.

How to use Luna UV/LED

The product's directions for use are:

  1. Shake the bottle well.
  2. Apply a small amount of adhesive to the extension and place it on the natural lash.
  3. Cure with a compatible professional UV/LED lamp, following its instructions.

The amount of adhesive should follow the Luna protocol. Avoid automatically carrying over techniques from other products, such as using a bigger drop because another brand works that way.

What you need to add it to your services

Besides the adhesive, you need a professional lamp designed for extensions and compatible with Luna.

Compatibility must be confirmed. Wavelength, exposure and working distance depend on the adhesive-device combination: there is no universal time that applies to every pairing.

Before adding it to your services, get familiar with the usage protocol and the recommended safety measures. The client must keep her eyes closed and the protection specified for the device must be used. Light curing does not rule out the possibility of allergies to the adhesive's ingredients either.

Storage: protection from light is essential

Luna should be stored between 5 and 20 °C, never above 25 °C. Keep the bottle upright, in its original packaging or a dark container, away from direct sunlight, UV light and LED lamps.

The recommended storage humidity is 30–50 %. Once opened, it should be used within one month, depending on storage conditions.

Writing down the opening date and putting the product away protected after dispensing makes it easier to keep track of in the treatment room. The included pouch and silica gel are part of that care.

7. A trend worth understanding from a technical standpoint

The interest in UV/LED adhesives has a practical explanation: they give professionals another way to manage bonding, which is especially relevant when conventional drying limits the placement margin.

Understanding their chemistry, protocol and requirements lets you assess this trend with sound judgement and decide how it might fit into your salon's services.

Luna UV/LED adhesive by Maxymova lets you place, adjust and only then activate the cure. Discover its features and see what this technology can bring to the way you work.
